Normally, it’s pretty redundant for a modern artist to use chains in their art as a metaphor for the human condition. Yeong-Deok Seo, an artist from Korea, breaks that cliche by using bicycle chains in many of his sculptures. Of course, he uses industrial chain link as well, but those sculptures tend to look like steel worms wound together to make a statue. Not to say those aren’t beautiful as well, but the real astonishment lies within the bike chain statues. Bike chains are much more fascinating and exciting because instead of illustrating a trapped soul, they are providing an expression of movement, possibly escape or the desire of escaping. Over one billion people every day ride bicycles, and this man turned an integral part of them into art.
