NEW STAGES: NARRATIVE IN MOTION AT RINGLING MUSEUM’S HISTORIC ASOLO THEATER

Sarasota, Fla. – New Stages: Narrative in Motion at the Ringling Museum’s Historic Asolo Theater heralds the return of storytelling in the new theatrical and choreographic forms for the 21st century. The four-part series of contemporary performance opens in January and runs through March. Tickets range from $15 to $25. This continuum of the Art of Our Time initiative at the Ringling Museum features performances directed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Bill Bowers, Circle of Eleven, and the Kate Weare Company.

By embracing the power of language, gesture, character, and emotion, artists are moving beyond the inscrutable abstractions of the experimental to once again explore the narratives of human relations. The authentic embodiment of those narratives in motion – when combined with poetry, media, and a renewed sense of musicality – emerges into new forms that explore and exemplify the rich diversity of ideas at play in the world today.

THE PERFORMANCES

LEO
February 21-23, 2012, 7:30 p.m.
From Berlin, the Circle of Eleven blends music, acrobatics, dance, and theater into a sophisticated form of entertainment that carries on the spirit of classic German variety theater at a contemporary circus level. It is not a play, or a circus act, or a film project. It is a self-contained, genre-defying performance that won the Carol Tambor Foundation’s “Best of Edinburgh Award” in 2011 and went on to become the hottest ticket at Spoleto. LEO explores a world where gravity has shifted and the hero must undertake a logic-defying adventure that reveals not only his dreams and desires but also his lust for life. Through a clever juxtaposition of live performance with projected film, two Leos move through identical spaces governed by opposing physical laws. It is a small but meaningful story of a man stuck in a box, hoping one day to find his way out.

Kate Weare Company
March 7-9 , 2013, 7:30 p.m.
With both rawness and precision, Kate Weare maps a humanism that is contemporary and profoundly stirring. Hailed for its startling combination of formal choreographic values and visceral, emotional interpretation, her work has been seen at The Joyce Theater, Danspace Project, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, and at venues throughout the U.S.

For the Historic Asolo Theater, Weare presents a program of open narrative spaces into which she invites the viewers to insert themselves and to see the work through the lens of personal experience. While in Drop Down she employs the power of tango to investigate the negotiations of erotic proximity, in Garden, she elicits innocence by drawing upon primitive issues origination, collective identity, and safety in the face of the nature’s unpredictable forces.

Additional Programming

ViewPoint: The Interplay Between Music and Dance January 19, 2013, 10:30 a.m.
Choreographer Elizabeth Weil Bergmann presents a duet danced by Moving Ethos directors to illustrate how music influences the way we experience modern dance.

FSU Dance Theatre
March 22 & 23, 7:30 p.m.
Works by the renowned resident faculty, alumni and guest artists performed by the highly skilled students of this top-ranked university dance program.

For tickets, call 941.360-7399 or visit www.ringling.org If purchasing tickets to all four performances in the Narrative in Motion series, get free admission to ViewPoint: The Interplay Between Music and Dance (Jan. 19, 10:30 a.m.) and FSU Dance Theatre (March 22 & 23, 7:30 p.m.).

“The presentation of contemporary art at the Ringling dates back to its first executive director, A. Everett Chick Austin, Jr., who helped transformed the arts in America in the twentieth century and the Museum with the addition of the Historic Asolo Theater and Circus Museum in the late 1940s,” noted Steven High, executive director of The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. “Chick advocated that, ‘the function of a museum is more than merely showing pictures….it is the place to integrate the arts and bring them alive.’ The Ringling Museum is building on his legacy and that of John and Mable Ringling. With the ‘Art of Our Time,’ we hope to enrich our community through the exploration of rich ideas and art forms at play today and in the future.”

The 2012-13 Art of Our Time season at the Ringling Museum is supported by a $50,000 grant from Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

About Art Center Sarasota:

Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. Founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, Art Supervisor for the Sarasota County Schools. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota today is a membership based organization but welcomes the entire community with affordable and accessible curated and juried exhibitions, art education for adults and youth, outreach for underserved youth and culturally related public programming.

Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art opportunities.

Let’s wish Train a Happy Birthday! He does a lot for the Indie community and artists/musicians all over the world. His tenacious and relentless pursuit of the WHOA endeavor is unprecedented. We wish you all the best for today and in the future. You can say Happy B Day to Train on Facebook or shout out to him by tweeting to @whoa_magazine.

We just found out today that Train was mentioned in James Moore’s new book Your Band is a Virus Expanded Edition here is what James had to say

“WHOA Magazine – www.whoamagazine.co Ever since I first started working with WHOA Magazine, the drive and enthusiasm of CEO Anthony “Train” Caruso has blown me away. They are one of the few publications at their level who are genuinely open to independent artists. In fact, they fill their pages with them as well as interview them every weekday on their WHOA 100 Radio show. With the new WHOA Label launched, there’s no stopping this company”.

All entries will be on display and priced for sale, according to Nancy Faris, Art Uptown vice president.

Artists 21 and older can submit one or two 2D or 3D works in any media in the January show, but only one work per artist will be accepted for the exhibition. Work must be for sale and priced. The gallery takes 25% commission on all sales.

Receiving date is Saturday, Jan. 5, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Artists should bring their work to the gallery on that day and fill out an entry form. Entry fee is $20 for each entry. Overall size is limited to 30”x30”, including frame; plexiglas only. Works must be wired for hanging. Rejected work pick-up will be Monday, Jan 7, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Final pickup of work is Friday, Jan. 25, 6-9 pm.

The Sarasota/Manatee Chapter of Soldier Songs & Voices will hold its inaugural series of workshops beginning October 11th, 2012. Soldier Songs and Voices was begun by musicians in the Austin, Texas area in 2009, as a part of Welcome Home Project, a nonprofit 501(c)3 foundation.
Workshop Sessions will be held at the Fogartyville Community Media & Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court, Sarasota, Florida. The use of this venue is provided free of charge by the Peace Education and Action Center, and WSLR Radio Station. Beginning on Thursday, 10/11/12, a once-a-week workshop series will take place from 6-8 pm. Participants will be expected to attend a minimum of six sessions, but may continue to participate as long as they wish.

Our Soldier Songs mission embraces American Veterans upon their return home, providing free Music Lessons and Songwriting Workshops. Interested veterans who enroll in a series of workshops will be supplied with a guitar if they are unable to furnish their own. Our “Soldier Songs” goal is simply to share the healing power of music with every veteran who wishes to learn to play. We are musicians who acknowledge the service, sacrifice, and sometime suffering of our heroic men and women in uniform.

We proudly offer veterans and musicians alike an opportunity to share with one another the incredible powers of expression and camaraderie that only music offers. We believe that playing music can be of benefit to those who are coping with the effects of Traumatic Brain Injuries and Post Traumatic Stress, as well as those experiencing difficulty reintegrating themselves into civilian life. Their involvement in a music
program provides a quality of life, supplements the efforts of the Department of Veterans Affairs, assures that no veteran is left behind the lines, and that they each make it all the way home The voluntary participation of local area Singer/Songwriters as workshop leaders is an essential element of this project. We have already obtained the participation of a cadre of experienced professional Singer/Songwriters who have agreed to donate their time to conduct the workshops.

Interested Veterans & Musicians or organizations are encouraged to contact the local Coordinator listed below in order to become involved. We are also looking for your guitars stored under the bed or tucked away in a closet. Let them become the gift of music you can share with our veterans. We have an agreement with Sarasota Guitar Company, 2111 Cortez Rd. W., www.sarasotaguitarcompany.com to provide acoustic guitars, cases, tuners and cord books at a great discount so we can furnish this equipment free of
charge to participating veterans who are unable to buy their own instrument.

Any veteran interested in learning to play a wind instrument is also encouraged to call on us. We will work on their specific interests. We have a musician willing to provide free lessons for saxophone, flute, and clarinet. We look forward to getting started and becoming a community together.

Douglas Teller Celebration of Life in Art at Art Uptown

A retrospective exhibition of the watercolor paintings of Douglas H. Teller,
noted artist, art educator and past president of Art Uptown who died earlier
this year, will be featured during October at Art Uptown, 1367 Main St.,
Sarasota. A reception to celebrate his life in Art will be held Oct. 20,
6-9 p.m. at the gallery. The exhibition will run from Sept. 29 to Oct.
27.

Before moving to Sarasota, the artist had a long career in Washington, D.C.,
where he taught printmaking, design and watercolor painting as Professor
Emeritus of Fine Arts of the George Washington University (GWU). In
Sarasota, he continued teaching intermediate to advanced watercolor artists
at his studio on Boulevard of the Arts, where he also created his own work.

Professor Teller’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, including
one-man shows at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Dimock Gallery of Art, the
Cosmos Club and at private galleries in the U.S., Europe and South America.
He also taught watercolor workshops in the U.S., France, England and Brazil.

The Michigan native attended Michigan State and Catholic University of
America. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree at GWU. Over the years, he
worked in traditional transparent watercolor, gouache, acrylics and various
experimental mediums, according to Rita Rust, in charge of exhibits at Art
Uptown. His images often are based on landscapes, both real and imaginary,
she said.

“We, at Art Uptown, are honored and privileged to host this show in memory
of our wonderful friend and exceptional artist, Douglas Teller,” Mrs. Rust
added.

The artist was a long-time member and past president of the Florida Suncoast
Watercolor Society, the Florida Watercolor Society and FLAG, the Florida
Artists Group. Last year, he rejoined Art Uptown, Sarasota’s oldest
continuously operated, artist-owned fine art gallery, after an absence.

Art Uptown welcomes the public to the reception and the month-long
exhibition of Douglas Teller’s work. Also on display will be the works of
the gallery’s 27 member artists. Regular gallery hours are Monday-Friday
The Closet Present:
Chrch!!!

Sunday September 16th at 8pm

(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota and The Closet Present: Chrch!!! This installment of Chrch!!! is a four band concert (though pronounced church, no religious doctrine or affiliation will be discussed or distributed) on Sunday, September 16th, 2012 at Art Center Sarasota, located at 707 N. Tamiami Tr. Sarasota, FL 34236. Doors open at 7:30pm and the concert starts at 8pm Cost is $10 suggested donation at the door. All ages are welcome, ID’s checked and children 12 and under are free.

This concert series, produced by The Closet, showcases the talents of several bands on the third Sunday of each month. September’s showcase features one out-of-town band and three local bands.

Roadkill Ghost Choir (Deland, FL)
“Always one of my favorite bands to see live, their majestic indie Americana is pretty breathtaking and redemptive. It’s a church service you could never sleep through.”
- David Hanson from Thedropp.com
Fancy Rat
Fancy Rat has secured a place as one of our scene’s favorite local bands with their combination of unique instrumental layers, infectious melodies, well-crafted lyrics, attention to musical detail, irresistible dance rhythms — the list goes on. As a live act they are a force to be reckoned with… -Sara Stovall, New College Tangent
O’Captain
The Sumpter is a 2 song’r that should definitely be included in your summer playlist. Both songs are catchy acoustic pop tunes full of vocal harmony, great acoustic guitar and heartfelt lyrics. “The Sumpter” has a melancholic harmonica that suits the song’s tone and lyrics beautifully. The galloping guitar strum and vocal harmony of “Eyes like Anchors” let loose into full on folk bliss as the song builds and ends. Overall, this is a solid release from O’Captain.
-Sarasota Day
Kyle Kern
Inspired by the DIY ethic of the hardcore-punk movement, Kyle Kern (Ladies Auxiliary, Brain Bust) is seeking to spread ideas as well as art. His concept is simple, “My music is free online and sold for cost at shows, and it will stay that way.” An obvious rejection of modern pop sensibility, Kern seeks to bring ethics back to modern music. For fans of Ryan Adams, Jeff Buckley, and Glen Hansard.

About Art Center Sarasota:

Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota, Florida,
founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, Art
Supervisor for the Sarasota County Schools. In its early years, the group
met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was
incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current
location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center
Sarasota today is a membership based organization but welcomes the entire
community with affordable and accessible curated and juried exhibitions, art
education for adults and youth, outreach for underserved youth, and culturally
related public programming.

Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture
artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art
opportunities.

About the Closet Presents:

Founded in 2010, The Closet Presents was formed to act as the cultural ambassadors for the local scene, the negotiating party between venues and local bands, and a landing pad for touring acts. The Closet’s mission is to curate the most musically cohesive and visually stimulating shows while providing an open forum for showcasing new local talent.

The Closet is honored to partner with Art Center Sarasota for this monthly show series. Art Center Sarasota provides the perfect setting for Chrch!!! by allowing us to take over their entire facility and create a truly unique experience. We are excited to host this show series in a unique, non-traditional venue where collaboration between arts of all mediums is the main focus.

“Erin and Greg are truly WHOA Worthy”Train WHOA100 “A must have for your indie collection” Benny WHOA100

SARASOTA, FL (July 23, 2012) —Bard and Mustache, one of the region’s most unique and acclaimed independent music acts, has announced the worldwide digital release of their new EP, Bitter Painter, for August 21st, 2012. The release of Bitter Painter will be supported by a comprehensive tour of the Eastern Seaboard, beginning in late August.

Bitter Painter marks a departure from the band’s earlier records, steering well beyond the limitations of acoustic instruments and the human voice. Bitter Painter is a densely layered pastiche of electric violins, fuzz guitars, looped cellos, and mechanized beats, tied together by Erin Murphy and Greg Bortnichak’s signature no-bull vocal deliveries.

After leaking this past June, critics were given a sneak-peak at the still-unfinished album, and the reviews were overwhelming. Mixtape Muse called it: “haunting, gorgeous, encompassing, and intense … a 3D conveyance of mind, body, heart, and soul distilled down to three of the most wonderful songs. “ Creative Loafing lauded the release for being “rich and resonant… offering sweetly poetic musings or understated yet vivid metaphor.”

The first single off of Bitter Painter is called “More Where That Came From”, and can be downloaded for re-posting in addition to high-resolution photographs, live videos, Bitter Painter in full, and other treats exclusively for the media at http://bardandmustache.com/press.

About Bard and Mustache:

Bard and Mustache is the project of independent music veterans, Erin Murphy (Founder of both Finch House Records and widely-popular Florida whimsy-rock outfit The Equines) and Greg Bortnichak (Sparta Philharmonic, Metal Hearts, Circa Survive). The duo met in 2010 while Greg was touring the country with Philadelphia based art-punk duo Sparta Philharmonic, and began recording together in January of 2011 for their first release, Falcor’s Burning Belly, which was self-released in April of that year.

Following consistent touring of the Northeast and Midwest, Bard and Mustache released a follow up to Falcor’s Burning Belly, called FOUND in October 2011. FOUND showcased the duo’s sense for nuance and range of expression with acoustic instruments, and followed in the steps of its predecessor utilizing a single live-take, lo-fi recording philosophy. They then toured heavily on FOUND, often in support of well-known national acts including Dinosaur Feathers, Baths, Vacationer, and The Damn Choir.

Early in 2012, Bard and Mustache began writing a new record, employing a completely different approach. Their new set was markedly more complex, reliant on hypnotic rhythms and the expressive potential of pure sound. It became apparent that the band’s new music necessitated a new approach to recording as well, so Greg and Erin got to work building an entirely analog studio, utilizing reel-to-reel tape machines from decades past to ensure that their music stayed as DIY, tactile, and honest as possible.

Recorded between April and May of 2012, Bitter Painter is the first record highlighting both Bard and Mustache’s new sound as well as their approach to documenting it. It also marks their first official release on the record label that they helped engineer together, Atlas/ Finch House Records.

About Atlas/ Finch House Records:

Atlas/ Finch House Records is a collaboration between Montclair NJ’s Atlas Records and Sarasota FL’s Finch House Records. Finch House Records was formed in 2008 by Erin Murphy and members of The Equines and Fancy Rat, releasing records by both bands to critical praise and unprecedented regional success. Atlas Records was formed in 2010 by Greg Bortnichak and members of the same tight-knit NJ music community that nurtured musicians of bands such as Sparta Philharmonic, Delicate Steve, Ratatat, Senses Fail, and M83.

Early in 2012, Atlas and Finch House decided to merge under a shared distribution contract by the Portland, OR-based Burnside Distribution Corp. They celebrated their first release together in February of that year for Cats In The Basement’s debut album DOO BEE DOO LA DEE DAY DUM BE DUM DRINK YOUR BLOOD.

“Burns Square Shindig II” w/ Cats in the Basement, S.N.A.P.M., Traphik 3:16, Vegatron, L.A. Russell and Frankie Alibro (5:30-10 p.m., Burns Square: intersection of S. Orange Ave. and S. Pineapple Ave., just south of Ringling Blvd., Sarasota; free, all-ages, rain or shine)

Historic art, restaurant and shopping district Burns Square (aka “Little Five Points”) typically throws a monthly art and sound walkabout the second Friday of each month. However, the July installment (Friday) has been elevated into a mostly music-centric celebration organizers are calling “Burns Square Shindig II.” Event coordinator Van Jazmin (also director of Clothesline Gallery & Boutique, the Shindig’s sponsor) sought to showcase established music ensembles together with recent scene additions in addition to scattered, random, live art offerings as a means of “celebrating local talent.” The all-ages, outdoor fest features campy-pop funsters Cats in the Basement, funk/rap-rockers S.N.A.P.M and alt-rock groovers Traphik 3:16 sharing the stage with up-and-comers Vegatron (dreamy atmospherics, from Ft. Myers), Sarasota singer-songwriter L.A. Russell and Englewood bluegrass banjoist Frankie Alibro. In the midst, Burns Court Café celebrates its one-year anniversary a day early with Tommy Goodman’s impromptu jazz trio (7-9 p.m.).

An after-party follows at The Shamrock Pub (11 p.m., 2257 Ringling Blvd., 21+) with a S.N.A.P.M. reprise
