New York City’s Drowners formed in early 2012 when singer/guitarist Matt Hitt sent some demos he’d written to guitarist Jack Ridley and bassist Erik Snyder, friends he’d met in bars downtown. Drummer Lakis Pavlou joined a few months later and the band began playing shows regularly around the Lower East Side.

They released a 7″ in February in the UK called Between Us Girls.

In April, they signed to NY label Frenchkiss. “We liked that Frenchkiss seemed to understand the semantics of being in a band.” Their are currently finishing up writing their debut album to be released this fall. Both the label and the band are thrilled for this amazing new partnership. Frenchkiss Records head, Syd Butler exclaims, “We believe this band is ready to take over the world… “

By: Brittany Clarke
It is that time of the year again music fans! Festival season is just beginning, and to start it off with a bang is the Annual Wanee Music Festival. Since 2005, the festival has been held on the Spirit of Suwannee River Music Park grounds, located in Live Oak, Florida. The park is host to several annual festivals, like Bear Creek, Purple Hatters Ball, and Orange Blossom Jam. Wanee is one of the largest festivals held on these grounds, taking place on the weekend of April 18-20 2013, with an attendance of 20,000-30,000.

This three day camping festival presents attendees with the option of primitive camping or bringing a camper. The 700 acre park is fully equipped with restrooms, showers, water, and a convenient store for all your camping needs. With VIP already sold out it is going to be a jammed packed event, so be sure to come early to find an awesome camping spot! However, if camping is not your style you can feel free to book a room in one of the cabins or lodging units. For accommodations, check availability by contacting this phone number: 386-364-1683. This year Wanee is teaming up with Conscious Alliance to host the ‘Art that Feeds’ food drive. By bringing 20 non-perishable food items, you will receive a FREE Wanee Music Festival poster. You can turn your food into Conscious Alliance ‘Art That Feeds’ Gallery, which can be found on the map when you arrive and all donations will go to the local Food Bank of Suwannee Valley in Lake City, FL.

The weekend will pack in 35 electrifying acts, with major headliners such as the Allman Brothers Band, Widespread Panic and Gov’t Mule. This year WHOA Magazine will be focusing on emerging bands like Galactic and friends, Blackberry Smoke, and Les Claypools Due de Twang. Music will begin at 12:30pm on Thursday the 18th and continue through the 20th. Tickets are being sold via Live Nation and can be purchased on the Wanee Website, starting at $205.00. Prices will remain at this margin until April 8th, so hurry and purchase your tickets to one of the most epic festivals at Suwannee Park this year. For more information on ticket sales and artists visit www.waneefestival.com.

he fact that Quentin Stoltzfus hasn’t released a record since Mazarin’s We’re Already There (2005) borders on absurd, but know this: over the last seven years somewhere between producing albums for friends, pulling hours as a professional mover, and building a world class recording studio Quentin wrote, re-wrote, recorded and re-recorded an album we couldn’t be more pleased to release – Light Heat.

After Mazarin ended circa 2006, Quentin stepped away from performing and releasing music. He did not, however, cease writing and recording music. Thankfully. With the help of an assembled group of friends including Paul Maroon, Matt Barrick, Peter Bauer and Walter Martin from The Walkmen, Quentin’s new venture, Light Heat, manages to weave classic references (Stereolab, The Byrds) with the sound of the future. The result is an album chock full of metaphysical news. Embodied within you’ll find sweet soft harmonies alongside guitar pyrotechnics and a rhythm section adrift in time signatures recalling Can, Faust, Cluster.

The eponymous Light Heat album will be out worldwide June 25th.

For those who worship at the altar of vinyl, Record Store Day is like Christmas, Eid, Thanksgiving and Diwali, all rolled into one. It’s a day when artists and labels celebrate the unsung heroes of the music business – the guys and girls of independent record stores – by releasing super-limited issues, picture discs, rarities and one-offs. It’s a day that we here at Light In The Attic hold dear to our hearts.

To mark this year’s event, taking place on Saturday, April 20th, 2013, we have four incredible releases to share with you. Firstly, there’s a limited edition (4000 copies, all hand-numbered) of one of the 20th century’s most pivotal singles: Public Image b/w Cowboy Song, the 1978 debut single by former Sex Pistol John Lydon’s new band, Public Image Ltd. The record comes in an exact reproduction of the original fold-out newsprint sleeve, and is available for the first time in the US. Our exploration of Public Image Ltd’s catalog, expressly for the U.S. market, will continue later this year, with the expanded re-release of the group’s debut album First Issue, from which ‘Public Image’ was taken.

Another essential 7″, again in a hand-numbered, limited pressing of 4000 but this time on mind-bending psychedelic swirl vinyl, is Mine Mine Mind b/w Bloody Hammer, the snarling Roky Erickson track that welcomed a changed performer back from the brink following the collapse of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. The single will launch Light In The Attic’s reissue series of Roky’s early solo masterworks.

Theppabutr Productions: The Man Behind The Molam Sound 1972-75 is a double LP in an old-school, tip-on gatefold jacket housed in an o-card, plus a fold-out poster. 400 random copies are pressed on gold wax. The release follows the celebrated Thai Funk: ZudRangMa compilations and gives an in depth look at the work of the man who was, essentially, the Berry Gordy of Thailand’s Molam sound.

Completing the set of ever-so-special releases is Deserted Songs by Mercury Rev. Following the re-release of the band’s celebrated Deserter’s Songs last year, this album presents, for the first time on vinyl, the rare demos, extra cuts and lost tracks that fell through the cracks of the 1998 classic. Pressed on clear and white vinyl and housed in a hand-numbered tip-on jacket, including an insert with a note from Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper.

To find out where and how you can get your hands on these records and more, visit the official Record Store Day website. And remember, for as long as there are record stores, Light In The Attic will keep giving you reasons to visit them.

ASSAULT TREATMENT SERVICES
All-Female Tribute Band Concert Rocks in Support of Women and Children

SANTA MONICA, CA— Every nine seconds, a woman in the U.S. is sexually assaulted or beaten. One out of every 4 girls and one out of every 6 boys are sexually abused by the time they reach 18 years old. The American Medical Association describes child sexual abuse as a silent, violent epidemic.
ShockBoxTV is hosting a Benefit Concert, with proceeds from the event donated to CATS (Center for Assault Treatment Services.) This Los Angeles-based, non-profit organization’s mission is to raise awareness, promote dignity and respect for victims of sexual abuse and assault, minimize their trauma, and provide law enforcement with the evidentiary documentation needed to prosecute offenders and keep them off the streets.
Three amazing bands will perform at the benefit concert, all-female tributes to rock music’s most legendary heroes. Lady Zep embodies the songs and spirit of super-group Led Zeppelin; Allison Chains pays tribute to grunge-rock mavens Alice in Chains; and Lynette Skynyrd captures the essence of iconic band Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is the FIRST TIME three professional all-female tribute bands will share the same stage in a turbo-charged rock concert extravaganza!
WHEN: Saturday, February 23, 2013 @ 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Dakota Music Lounge, 1026 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica 90401
COST: $20 suggested donation at the door
The band performances will also be broadcast via “live-stream” on the web!
About the Center for Assault Treatment Services (CATS): Founded in 1997, Northridge Hospital Medical Center’s CATS program is a 24 hour, 7 day-a-week program for victims of sexual abuse and assault of all ages. CATS works with law enforcement, child protective services and the District Attorney’s office to assist with the collection of evidence, proper reporting of abuse and follow-up investigation. CATS also collaborates with local rape crisis centers to provide advocates and post abuse treatment for victims. Find CATS online at www.abuse-assaultservices.org.

Is Facebook Intentionally Hurting Businesses? We Think so and we are removing our facebook until further notice until fair practices are put in to play instead of greed driven algorithms. We ask you to determine how facebook is impeding upon your progress and act accordingly.

Posted by Jon Parks on Dec 3, 2012 in Blog, Dijital Farm Report

For the past several years, Facebook has been a boon to businesses of all sizes. The social network, through its Fan Page offering, provides a business the opportunity to connect with customers and potential customers and offer them information, special deals and respond to questions and complaints all while building a “community.” But during the past few months, there’s been a bit of trouble brewing in the world of Facebook and it is impacting businesses in a big way. Businesses are reaching fewer and fewer of their fans when they post status updates to their fan pages and many want to know: is Facebook intentionally making it more difficult to reach fans and if so, why? Is Facebook intentionally hurting your business

The Edgerank Algorithm
Like many major media platforms, Facebook uses an algorithm (think: complex formula) to determine which status updates will show in the news feed of a Facebook user. This means that, as a Facebook user, you do not see every single status update from your friends or the pages that you’ve “liked” in the past. Instead, Facebook’s Edgerank Algorithm determines what type of status updates and content you’ll see and it is based on what content you’ve interacted with in the past. Here’s an example: if you regularly comment on your friend Bob’s photos, you’re more likely to see more of Bob’s status updates and content in the future. By contrast, if you rarely comment, share or “like” Sally’s status updates, you’ll see fewer status updates from Sally over time. Edgerank uses fairly specific signals to regulate this activity for both individuals and fan pages on Facebook.

How Many Fans are Seeing Your Status Updates?
In late August/early September, Facebook fan page administrators began to see a decrease in the reach (the number of people that see a status update) of their status updates. In our client’s fan pages, we’ve seen decreases in reach of anywhere from 25-50%. In some of those instances, less than one-third of all fans ever see a status update. If you’ve integrated Facebook into your marketing strategy and built up a fan page following of any size, a decrease of this amount can really hurt your business.

Why is Facebook Doing This?
This is where things get a little more complicated. Some Facebook fan page operators argue that Facebook is doing this as a way to make more money. They point to the timing of the change and how it coincides with Facebook’s newest offering for fan pages to pay to promote their status updates and just how costly those updates can be as evidence that Facebook is intentionally restricting access to fans as a way to increase their own bottom line. Facebook, in turn, says that the changes are the result of their ongoing desire to keep the news feed from flying out of control and becoming useless. The answer to this question probably resides a little in both camps.

What Businesses Can Do
Regardless of whether or not Facebook is changing the rules of the game on how businesses can reach their fans, there are a few things you can do to help your business’s fan page:

Monitor your Facebook Insights data so you know what your “reach” is at any given time. If you’re not checking your Insights data, now would be a great time to start. Any page administrator can access this data when they pull up the fan page. Examine the statistics to see how many people are seeing individual status updates. How does this compare to the total number of fans you have? How are the numbers trending over time? Bottom line: you need to keep an eye on this data so you’ll know whether or not you have a problem.
Play to the known strengths of the Edgerank algorithm. Historically, Edgerank has given greater weight to photos and videos (and the engagement that they receive) as a signal to determine how many people see your status updates. Consider working these into your overall Facebook content marketing strategy to engage your fans. While this won’t guarantee that you’ll reach all of your fans, it can help with exposure. Bottom line: adjusting your Facebook marketing strategy to play to these strengths can help with exposure.
Determine whether or not it makes sense for you to pay to promote your posts to fans. For some businesses, this is a no-brainer. The survival of their business depends on their fans seeing updates, so they will pony up the money to make sure their posts are seen. But for many, this may not be financially possible. As Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, discovered, the costs are astronomical and, therefore, not feasible. Bottom line: you need to know how much it costs to reach all of your fans and decide whether or not you’re willing to pay that cost.
Explore other social media networks as alternate ways to connect with your audience. Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, YouTube, Instagram – the list of social networks goes on and on. Explore these networks to see if you can find your target audience and engage with them there. Bottom line: Facebook may be the biggest social network, but it isn’t the only game in town.

A good social media strategy, no matter whether it is a Business-to-Business social media strategy or Business-to-Consumer strategy, is one that is focused on finding your audience and engaging with them in ways that benefit them. Facebook’s recent changes don’t have to be the end of your social media strategy. Instead, use the data that is available and diversify your social media efforts to expand your reach with your audience.

HUNTER & THE DIRTY JACKS LAUNCH “SERVICE YOUR SOUL” TUESDAYS AT HARVELLE’S SANTA MONICA
Weekly Residency Will Raise Money, Food, and Instruments for the Homeless, Hungry, As Well As Teach Homeless and Foster Children Music

Hunter & The Dirty Jacks have announced that the Los Angeles-based band is putting forth a weekly residency every Tuesday starting January 8th, 2013 at Harvelle’s Santa Monica. The residency will consist of a night of blues based rock and roll performed by Hunter & The Dirty Jacks. In addition, the residency will be a charity drive to raise money, food, and instruments for the homeless, hungry, as well as teach homeless and foster children music.

There are approximately 250,000 homeless people in Los Angeles County, including 30,000 homeless in Santa Monica. Hunter & The Dirty Jacks are teaming up with Harvelle’s as well as the charities Feed Your Soul and Magic Music Foundation to raise awareness in order to help the underprivileged in the community. Every Tuesday, the cover charge will be pledged towards the charities. Additional donations are welcome. Also, two non-perishable food items or a musical instrument can be pledged at the door for admission.

Hunter Ackerman, frontman for Hunter & The Dirty Jacks said “In order to see the change in the world you want to see, you must be the change”. Jon Siembieda, co-founder for Hunter & The Dirty Jacks, added “This is a tremendous need right in our backyards. Los Angeles County has the highest amount of homeless people in the United States. We want to do more to reach out and take care of those that are fallen under hard times among us in the community.”

Hunter and The Dirty Jacks comprise a virtual all-star cast of Los Angeles and Orange County-area musicians that have been playing locally and regionally for over ten years apiece. Fronted by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Hunter Ackerman, and anchored by Jon Siembieda and Sean Soto on guitar, Aaron Barnes on bass, and Brian Lara on drums, the Dirty Jacks put forth an extremely high energy, emotionally compelling performance coupled with a rare combination of soulful originals and tasty covers. The sound is rock and roll with a soul and blues edge, ala the Black Keys, Rolling Stones, Black Crowes, and Jet. The band is very seasoned for all players being in the late 20s and early 30s. The Dirty Jacks debuted at House of Blues Sunset Strip on 9/29/12 to a resounding success. In addition, the band is scheduled to play several gigs in the near future, including a mini tour of Northern California at the end of January, with additional shows in the works. The bandmates collectively have experience playing several casinos in and out of state, House of Blues Sunset, House of Blues Anaheim, Coach House, Harvelle’s, Observatory, Detroit Bar, and many other venues. The bandmates have collectively shared bills with bands of the likes of Tommy Castro, Eric Sardinas, Dave Mason, Walter Trout, Cinderella, Led Zepagain, Wayward Sons, Wild Child Child, War, and many others.

Gear up and get ready for this year’s 2012 Bear Creek! This isn’t just your average music festival with huge stages and over crowds of screaming fans. Bear Creek is quite the opposite. Held in Live Oak, Florida about 45 min north of Gainesville, this festival offers an array of colorful options to get involved in while there. Over the past six years this festival has been in full swing, it is held on the lush, verdant grounds of Suwannee River Music Park. This park is home to several annual festivals, like Wannee, Black Water, and Orange Blossom Jam. This is a three day camping festival with the option of Primitive Camping or bringing your camper. This Park is fully equipped with restrooms, showers, water, and a convenient store, for all your camping needs. Bear Creek stands apart from other music festivals in that it is also an art festival. Visual artists set up front row at the music shows, were they paint live with the act, by the end of the show you are not only blown away musically but you also may find yourself mesmerized by the paintings. There are also gazebos of many artists displaying their work at the festival, where you can stop and have a personal chat with them. There are tons of food stands, and unique vendors as well.
Over the course of three days and three stages, 53 acts will play the weekend out, many acts will even be doing second sets, and don’t be surprised if you see your favorite band members walking around the grounds, they’re there to have a good time too. Be sure to bring your hammock to set up at the stage. Awesome bands are coming to Bear Creek this year, with many veterans returning for another wild time, such as the excellent and soulful, Lettuce, ripping it up on guitar, as always, Umphrey’s Magee, and the Europe loved New Mastersounds. This year Zach Deputy is a favorite contender and a man you must check out. Who is he exactly? He is a one man band rocking the world around one beat at a time. He’s been known to play live shows on top of trailers, out in the middle of the street, and even on college campuses. He plays small shows, he plays big shows, he’s a one man band, fully equipped with every instrument he needs, to satisfy your musical soul. To watch a Zach Deputy show is truly an experience unlike any other. Starting off with just one instrument he will melodically incorporate each new sound, essentially creating his own band. His beach vibe sounds will make you feel like you washed ashore, warming you up in the cold winter night. If you really dig this cat then you should support him. He will be hosting a charity disc golf tournament on the 18-hole Magnolia Disc Golf Course, Saturday at 10AM But Zach Deputy is just one of the many singular talents on the line-up of Bear Creek 2012. Keep an eye out for uprising artists like Beebs and Her Money Makers. If you are looking for a relaxing camping experience, with rich music and fun loving people, Bear Creek is the place for you. To find out about ticket sales and more information about Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival check out the website at www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com.

For their latest offering, Raise Up The Sheets, Freshkills tapped ‘elegant degenerate’ Jim Sclavunos, the No Wave icon who performed with Sonic Youth, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and the Cramps before hopping behind the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ drum kit. Sclavunos: “Freshkills inhabit a dark but thrilling underworld in which relentless machine-like rhythmic intensity hammers ear-anvils at the bidding of wryly louche after-hours philosophy. They’re the visceral embodiment of power and poetry.”

Raise Up The Sheets attacks on every front like a pandemic. The songs are prettier, darker, more concise and more expansive. Lipez is wounded and acerbic, the rhythm section both tight and monstrous with military precision and vulgar swing, the twin guitars frantic, chaotic and dangerous as a sharpened screwdriver. The whole band sounds like they’ve been cornered and will have to fight their way out. It’s anyone’s guess who will win, but either way, it’ll be worth watching.

Freshkills has toured the US and UK, sharing the stage with acts like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sleigh Bells, TV On The Radio, …Trail of Dead and Mission of Burma.

After smashing the dance floor with these tunes all summer, Trouble & Bass are proud to finally release this new EP from grime and dubstep legend Plastician. One of the founding fathers of UK bass, Plastician holds down his own Terrorhythm label and one of the most popular shows on Rinse.FM, as well as being a highly sought-after DJ around the world. He was one of the first guests ever at the Trouble & Bass parties and is a long time friend of the label’s who has created classics including “Intensive Snare” “Cha” and “Japan.”

This massive 7-track EP kicks off with “Bad Like Us” (and its instrumental version, “Retro”). First appearing on the Trouble & Bass Christmas compilation in 2011 and featured on the Get Darker compilation “This is Dubstep 2011”, this track gets reworked with a terrific vocal by London MC Doctor, who goes mental over an infectious grime beat slapped up with tons of old-skool rave vibes. Instant rewind, trusssss!

Plastician also teams up with Doctor for the smoky foundation dubstep of “Rebel Music,” which features serious ragga chat over deep beats and bass that will have you reaching for the chalice. A must for reggae heads!

The rest of the EP is devoted to mysterious and minimal instrumental grime numbers that have been thoroughly tested on the dance floor. “Elixir” is an MC favorite thatʼs often been played on Plasticianʼs radio show—a haunted and squelchy melody laid atop skanking reggae flavors and hiccupping percussion. Deadweight handclaps and a videogame feel outdo the competition on the seriously heavy “Pwned,” while “Senate” ends this match with a roundhouse kick of wistful grime strings over a deep drums and bass. Donʼt sleep!
