Cameron Stenger’s authentically bittersweet album Lovers is a wonderfully honest and delicate album filled with the kind of melancholy folk only a wind blown troubadour could muster.
Near the Hudson River as the seasons changed, Stenger completed this striking 10 song LP that gently peers into the depths of the trapped emotions invoked by a past love, released when his hands finally held his guitar. With every song, he seeks to explain what could not be communicated properly at the time.
Bedroom musicians in this day and age, when done right, have the ability to take you back to a time when you were experiencing exactly what they are going through. A soothing voice singing sweet, unadulterated melodies over intimate fingerpicking with just the right tinge of emotion can sweep you away to another time and place. Lovers is an album that has this ability and more.
Cameron’s music also takes you on a journey through the areas of your sub conscience you ordinarily inhabit while sleeping. This is not to say that the music will put you to sleep, but does what sleep does to the mind – refreshes, inspires, and restores – like a late night drive between worlds. “I get lost in dreams with both eyes open” he sings over the enchanting chord progression of “Come Home”, like Doug Martsch from Built to Spill channeling Elliott Smith on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Stenger sums the up the LP as “a big explanation to someone I have loved”, and judging by the tone of the album and lines like “you used to love me before I tore us apart” we can surmise it didn’t work out as well as it could have. Thank goodness for us that Cameron transmuted these feelings into wonderfully crafted, melodic folk songs that touch the heart and soul.
His ability to move into incredibly powerful chorus’s with melody lines that linger on after the song is over, allows for deeper meditation on the lyrics. Unlike the throngs of other singer/songwriters, Cameron’s love songs unravel into epic, emotionally rich ballads with beautiful touches of saddness, hope and honest revelation.
